Greeting from the Bible

L The Lord be with you (Ruth 2:4)
C The Lord bless you (Ruth 2:4)

Old Testament Reading

L After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, "Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your reward shall be very great." 2Abram said, "O Lord GOD, what will You give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?" 3And Abram said, "Since You have given no offspring to me, one born in my house is my heir."

C Then behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, "This man will not be your heir; but one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir." 5And He took him outside and said, "Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them " And He said to him, "So shall your descendants be."
Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.

L (James 2:23) "Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God."

C (Isaiah 41:8) "But thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend."

L (2 Chronicles 20:7) "Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever? "

L My soul waits in silence for God only; From Him is my salvation. 2He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken. 3How long will you assail a man, That you may murder him, all of you, Like a leaning wall, like a tottering fence?
C They have counseled only to thrust him down from his high position; They delight in falsehood; They bless with their mouth, But inwardly they curse. Selah. My soul, wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be shaken.
L On God my salvation and my glory rest; The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God. Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah. Men of low degree are only vanity and men of rank are a lie; In the balances they go up; They are together lighter than breath.
C Do not trust in oppression And do not vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase, do not set your heart upon them. Once God has spoken; Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God; 12And lovingkindness is Yours, O Lord, For You recompense a man according to his work.

Reading from Proverbs

L Do not forsake your own friend or your father's friend, And do not go to your brother's house in the day of your calamity; Better is a neighbor who is near than a brother far away. He who blesses his friend with a loud voice early in the morning, It will be reckoned a curse to him.

C Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another. As in water face reflects face, So the heart of man reflects man.

L The crucible is for silver and the furnace for gold, And each is tested by the praise accorded him.

Reading from Ecclesiastes

C Then I looked again at vanity under the sun. There was a certain man without a dependent, having neither a son nor a brother, yet there was no end to all his labor. Indeed, his eyes were not satisfied with riches and he never asked, "And for whom am I laboring and depriving myself of pleasure?" This too is vanity and it is a grievous task.

L Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up. And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart.

Gospel Reading

L "This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. 13"Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.

C "You are My friends if you do what I command you. 15"No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.

L "You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. 17"This I command you, that you love one another.

Simple Petition

L Father God, I am envious of Abraham. I want to be your friend too. You have let me become Abraham's child, so may I as his son request that you, my father Abraham's friend, may be my friend also? I see from Abraham's life that he believed you and was therefore called your friend. I too believe you. I take you at your word.

C Christ, my Lord, I rejoice that you have laid your life down for me. Since there is no greater love than dying for a friend, you have loved me with the greatest love. In so doing, you have put me in the category of your friends. In making known to me your will, you also make me your friend. By doing what you have commanded, I am showing you I want to be your friend.
