Celtic Morning Prayer!

(Compiled and adapted primarily from Alexander Carmichael's "Carmina Gadelica" and The Divine Liturgy according to St. Germain of Paris)

Opening

L: In the name of the Holy Three above, Father, Son and Spirit everlasting. Amen. Let the brightness of the Lord be upon us.
C: Bring us from the new light of this day, O God, to the guiding light of eternity.
L: We praise you, blessed Father, for the generous gift of creation: the beaming sun, the guiding stars and the warming fire.
C: Alleluia.
L: We adore you, blessed Son, for the gracious gift of revelation: the torch of faith, your Word to illumine our way and the shining example of all heaven's saints and angels.
C: Alleluia.
L: We thank you, blessed Spirit, for the gentle gift of inspiration. Incite us to obey you, ignite us with joy about you and sustain us with hope for you.
C: Alleluia.
L: Thanks be to you, Jesus Christ, who brought us up from last night to the joyous light of this day,
C: Who won everlasting life for our souls through the blood you shed for us,
L: In the steep common path of our calling, be it easy or uneasy to our flesh,
C: Be it bright or dark for us to follow, may your own perfect guidance be upon us.
L: We beseech you to shield us from sin, we beseech you to shield us from ill.
C: O Christ of the poor! O Christ of the wounds! Give us wisdom along with your grace.
L: May the Holy One claim us, and protect us on sea and on land and in the air.
C: And lead us from step to step to the peace of the everlasting City. Amen.

Old Testament Reading

L 1 Love the LORD your God and keep his requirements, his decrees, his laws and his commands always. 8 Observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 9 and so that you may live long in the land that the LORD swore to your forefathers to give to them and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 The land you are entering to take over is not like the land of Egypt, from which you have come, where you planted your seed and irrigated it by foot as in a vegetable garden. 11 But the land you are crossing the Jordan to take possession of is a land of mountains and valleys that drinks rain from heaven. 12 It is a land the LORD your God cares for; the eyes of the LORD your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end. 13 So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you todayˇXto love the LORD your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul- 14 then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and oil. 15 I will provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.

Prayer to the Trinity

L: The strength of the Triune be our defense in distress.
C: The strength of the precious Father, King of grace.
L: The strength of Christ, his peace and his Passover.
C: The strength of the Spirit, physician of health.
L: May our weaknesses ever be covered by his might.
L: Pour down upon us from heaven the rich blessings of your forgiveness.
C: You who are foremost in the City, be patient with us.
L: Grant us, Savior of Glory, the love of God, the friendship of God, the affection of God.
C: And the will of God to do on earth at all times, as angels and saints do in heaven. Amen.

Gospel Reading

C 1"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

God of Creation

L: You are Lord of the Elements.
C: King of the sun, King of the moon.
L: King of the planets, King of the stars.
C: King of the earth, King of the sky.
L: Lovely is your countenance.
C: And beautiful is your radiance.

Today's Concerns

L: Bend down your ears to us, O God.
C: Let our prayers ascend upward to you.
L: We offer to you the concerns of this day.
God, guide me with your wisdom.
God, chastise me with your justice.
God, help me with your mercy.
God, console me with your peace.
L: Bend down your ears to us, O God.
C: Let our prayers ascend upward to you.
L: We offer to you the concerns of this day.
C God, fill me with your bounty.
God, protect me with your shield.
God, cover me with your mantle.
For the sake of your anointed Son,
Jesus Christ, seed of David,
Visiting One of the Temple,
Sacrificial Lamb of the Garden, who died for me.

C Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, goodwill to men.
L Praise to thee, O Christ, the Man
Preacher of repentance, Caller of fishers of men, Healer of the sick, Teacher of the Kingdom, Light of the World, Fulfillment of the Law and Prophets, Lover of your enemies, Highest in authority, Rebuker of demons, Master of the Twelve, One Greater than John the Baptist, Condemner of Bethsaida, Giver of Rest, Lord of the Sabbath, Servant of Yahweh.
C What kind of man is this? Even the winds and waves obey Him.
L Praise to thee, O Christ the Lamb
Lamb without spot or blemish, Without a broken bone, Anointed for burial (Mt 26:1), Betrayed for 30 pieces of silver, Slapped before the Sanhedrin, Denied by beloved Peter Rejected for Barabbas, spat on by soldiers, crowned with thorns, crucified between thieves, abandoned by His disciples, forsaken by His Father, buried in Joseph's tomb
C Behold the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world
L Praise to thee, O Christ, Exalted One
Raised by the Father (Acts 2:32), victor over death, sin and Satan, seated at the Father's right hand, worthy to open the scroll of judgment, worthy to receive power, wealth, wisdom, strength, honor, glory, and praise, worker of great and marvelous deeds, worker of just and true acts, King of the Ages,
C Therefore God exalted him to the highest place, and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
L Praise to thee, O Christ, Returning King
King of Kings, Lord of Lords, King forever, Judge of the whole world, Temple of heaven, Light of heaven, Alpha, Omega, Beginning and End, maker of all things new.
C I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. "He will rule them with an iron scepter." He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

Immanuel

C God with me lying down.
God with me rising up.
God with me in each ray of light.
Not one ray of joy without him,
Not one ray without him.
Christ with me sleeping.
Christ with me waking.
Christ with me watching.
Every day and night,
Each day and night.
God with me protecting.
The Lord with me directing.
The Spirit with me strengthening.
L: May you be filled this morning with the mercy of our God. Amen.
