Photocopiers

Over the years, Christians have used many methods to get Christian materials to house church Christians. We have carried them in ourselves, set up printing presses, and even allowed the Chinese to copy the books by hand. Frankly, carrying books in is terribly expensive and risky; setting up a printing press is even more so; and copying books by hand takes too long. With the technology available from a photocopier that collates the pages automatically, we have a safer, less expensive way to distribute materials over a wide area.

  1. We already have many books in electronic format that are legal for us to copy freely inside China.
  2. Already in China, there are photocopiers for sale that can take a hundred-page document and make 50 double-sided copies. All a person has to do is to lift the collated document from the machine and staple it. You now have a book.
  3. We have already set one of these photocopiers up in one province of China, and our colleagues there are copying many books for the use of their contacts throughout the province.
  4. All we need to do is to help our contacts purchase a photocopier, and they can then take the project from there.
Our goal is to have six photocopiers up and running and distributing printed materials over a wide area.

Copier for Hainan

I was glad to be the connection between a donor in Singapore and distributors in Beijing who bought thousands of US dollars' worth of books and sent them to the northeast three provinces of China that we call Manchuria. It is great that we can get some books in China through the Three-Self Church at a low price and can get them to other parts of China to make them available to other people.

Books for Beijing

I have an arrangement with my contact in Beijing that I will send him any books that I find in my travels in China. The last time I went to China, I sent him four boxes of books. Not every book is available in every bookstore, so I bought what I could in one province and mailed the boxes, and then bought what I could in another province and mailed them.

I have also worked out an arrangement with a businessman in the US who takes the books I order for him in the US and puts them in his suitcase and carries them to China and mails them to my contact in Beijing.

What I like about my contact in Beijing is that he doesn't hoard these. He gets them out to his co-workers and local Chinese to be able to use.

Books for Hainan

I have a book that lists all of the Christian bookstores in China. There is no entry for the province of Hainan. So, a while back I thought that the best way to rectify this problem would be to order books from a bookstore elsewhere and mail the books. I contacted my friend in Beijing who went to the bookstore there and ordered 50 study Bibles and 50 copies of Henrietta Mears' What the Bible is all About and mailed them to Hainan. The books took so long, I actually gave up on them. But, about a month after they were ordered, the books arrived and were given to house church Christians in that area. I later talked with one of the ladies who received a set. She said, "It's nice to be able to get religious books." They aren't readily available.

Books for Manchuria

We were able to get a really good photocopier in Hainan--the church there paid 1/4 of the machine, and then churches outside China helped with the rest of cost. The church in Hainan will have to pay for all expenses incurred in using it and will supply the manpower. This copier allows them to help other churches as well as provide their own people with many copies of materials that we have in electronic format. This copier has a special function that automatically collates up to 50 pages so that we don't have to have piles of paper all around the room.

Books for Nanhei

Several years ago I got in touch with English teachers that are based in Nanhai. Last year, I had the chance to pass through their area. Since they had recently led some people to Christ, they asked me for discipleship materials in Chinese. I sent them two large boxes from two locations in China. The one box took three months to get there, but I rejoice that I could get this large amount of helpful materials to them without crossing the border.

Books for Henan

I taught for a house church network far out in the country in Henan Province a few years ago. Since I saw that many of the preachers had very little in the way of material possessions, I asked the leadership whether they could use more materials. Over the next couple of years, I sent large shipments of study Bibles and Bible encyclopedias to them.
